The Smokin Pug – Down home American grub
Down-home American grub served with a smile
Tucked behind Patpong this little shophouse is packed tight with western diners salivating for a slice of down-home Americana. It’s no wonder that this little eatery is causing quite a buzz around town, the portions are huge, the staff is prompt and friendly, the drinks are stiff, and most importantly the food is high-quality and finger-lickin-delish.
The Smokin Pug is run by an American couple and they’re not messing around when it comes to portions or flavors. They have three house-made BBQ sauces and by serving all their meat undressed, it means you get to sauce it how you like it. The flavor of the Kansas City sauce was a knockout with its perfect balance of sweet and savory with a peppery bite.
It seems clear that the brisket and ribs are their signature dishes, smokey, tender, succulent and cooked to utter perfection. The brisket sandwich and a half-rack of baby back ribs is more than enough for two serious American-appetites or three peckish diners.
The imported slow cooked brisket bares a thick smoke ring, it’s fork tender yet didn’t fall apart when stacked at least two inches high on a soft bun, topped with fried onion strings and the sauce of your choosing. However if you order one thing here, go with the ribs. They’re fall-of-the-bone tender and basted in caramelized sauce with the perfect intensity of smoke and served with cornbread, baked beans, and coleslaw. Do yourself a favor, order a side of the mac and cheese, it’s topped with house-cured bacon. I would come again just to eat this melty, cheesy, bacony goodness. My only complaint is that the bowl wasn’t big enough!
Run, don’t walk here, for authentic American BBQ however if you have more than two in your party call ahead a few days and make a reservation. The Pug is cozy and fills up fast.
