The Missing Burro
Your prayers have finally been answered – get here now for truly authentic Mexican tacos
The Mexican Food Gods have finally answered your prayers, in the form of The Missing Burro by serving up real-deal food with flavors right off the streets of Mexico. Run don’t walk straight to The Missing Burro on Thonglor Soi 7. It’s owned and operated by two brothers from Mexico City along with their German business partner and outstanding Mexican Chef Tomas.
What’s key about the cuisine at The Missing Burro is that it’s straight up Mexican food, there’s nothing Tex-Mex about it. So don’t come looking for Burritos because you won’t find them on the menu.
Start off your meal with an order of fresh guacamole. The chef prepares each order fresh and it’s dressed simply with tomato, a touch of onion, and a squeeze of lime. The flavor of the avocados is really the star of the show.
Another great appetizer are the flautas, which are deep fried rolled tacos, stuffed with seasoned shredded chicken and topped with shaved lettuce, tomato and a drizzle of crema. The flautas are served with a side of refried beans and the most delicious smoked chili salsa.
Or opt for the sopesitos, they’re little deep fried masa cakes topped with refried beans, shredded meat and fresh lettuce and tomato.
For drinks don’t miss out on the delicious and comforting horchata, a rice milk drink that’s traditionally seasoned with vanilla and cinnamon. They make a killer pisco sour that’s limey and pairs perfectly with spicy food. They’re also offering a sweet and refreshing sangria with macerated fruit. If you really want to feel like you’re in Mexico, go for the handshaken margarita made with Jose Cuervo Reposado, agave syrup and orange. Or try out one of their many imported Mexican beers.
The main event at The Missing Burro is the tacos. The carnitas tacos are succulent shredded pork, seared until crisp around the edges and served with a side of charred salsa verde. The subtle brightness of oranges cut through the intense porky flavor of the carnitas. This is always my go-to order and The Missing Burro transported me right back to the streets of Mexico.
The Al Pastor is marinated pork in pineapple to lend sweetness and help tenderize the meat. It’s served hot, thinly sliced, and browned around the edges then topped with a slice of fresh pineapple and a side of extra spicy salsa. All tacos are topped with diced onion and cilantro and served with a lime wedge, as they should be. The servings are generous too, an order of tacos comes in under 300 THB with 6 tacos.
For a cheesy bite try the Choriqueso or the Chiliqueso, served piping hot in a small ramekin, it’s melted queso with either housemade chorizo or mild green peppers. The chorizo, while mild in heat is nicely spiced. You can either dip your chips or roll the cheesy goodness into a warm flour tortilla and devour.
Also try the enchiladas, it comes with 3 generous rolled tacos stuffed with shredded chicken and then smothered in rich red chili sauce and a side of their outstanding refried beans.
The salsas are all well executed, bold on flavor and heavy with authentic Mexican chilies. They act as the perfect companion to the big flavors in each dish.
Despite having bright, authentic flavors the portions are generous and the prices hit the mark. You’ll walk away from The Missing Burro feeling satisfied and content. For a few hours it will feel like you’ve slipped away from Bangkok, between the heavenly smells and flavors, the sounds of Mexican music, the a variety of Mexican beers and strong cocktails, along with the welcoming service.
Calling this place a hidden gem really isn’t enough. I can now happily live out the rest of my years in Bangkok knowing that I’ll never have to want for authentic tacos ever again.
